What is an orb in astrology?
Every aspect has an exact mathematical angle. A square is exactly 90 degrees, a trine is exactly 120 degrees and an opposition is exactly 180 degrees.
In practice, planets do not need to be separated by the exact angle for astrologers to consider the aspect active. A small amount of difference is allowed. That permitted difference is called the orb.
For example, if two planets are 88 degrees apart, they may still form a square because they are only two degrees away from the exact 90-degree angle.
How is an orb calculated?
First, calculate the actual angular distance between the two planets. Then compare that distance with the exact angle of the aspect.

The vertical bars mean that the result is treated as a positive distance.
Example: square
Suppose two planets are separated by 93 degrees.
|93° − 90°| = 3°
The planets form a square with an orb of three degrees.
Example: trine
Suppose two planets are separated by 118 degrees.
|118° − 120°| = 2°
The planets form a trine with an orb of two degrees.
Orbs in a natal chart
In a natal chart, the planetary positions describe one fixed moment: the time of birth.
Once the chart has been calculated, the angular distance between two natal planets does not change. A natal square with an orb of three degrees remains a square with an orb of three degrees.
Natal-chart orbs are therefore static. They do not approach exactness or move away from it after birth within the natal chart itself.
Astrologers may still describe a natal aspect as applying or separating by examining the planets' motions at the moment of birth, but the recorded natal orb itself never changes.
Why are natal aspects static?
A natal chart is comparable to a photograph of the sky taken at one particular moment.
The planets continued moving after birth, but the natal chart preserves their original positions. It does not continuously update those positions.
For this reason, AstroNet can apply a stable set of orb limits to natal aspects. Once a natal aspect falls within the configured orb, it remains part of that chart.

Compares two fixed natal charts. Inter-chart aspect orbs remain static once calculated.
Orbs in transits
A transit compares the current or future position of a moving planet with a natal planet or chart point.
Unlike natal aspects, transit aspects are temporary. The transiting planet moves toward the exact aspect, reaches exactness and then moves away.
Transit orbs are usually more restricted than natal orbs. A wide natal aspect may still be considered meaningful because it forms part of the permanent chart structure. A transit with the same wide orb may be too distant from exactness to feel clearly active.
Some astrologers allow several degrees for slow outer-planet transits. Others use only one or two degrees. Some widen the orb for conjunctions and oppositions, while others use the same limit for every major aspect.
Orbs for outer-planet transits
Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune and Pluto move more slowly than the personal planets. Their transits can remain close to a natal position for a long time, especially when retrograde motion causes repeated exact contacts.
AstroNet tends to use strict orbs for transits involving the outer planets. This reduces the risk of treating a very broad period as one continuously active transit.
A narrow orb helps distinguish the period in which the transiting planet is most directly engaging the natal position from the much longer period in which it is only moving through the same general part of the zodiac.
This is a methodological choice rather than a universal astrological law. Another astrologer may choose a wider orb and interpret the transit as a longer developmental phase.
Mars transits and the timing of the orb
Mars moves much faster than the outer planets and often describes a shorter period of action, irritation, urgency, effort or conflict.
Many astrologers observe that a Mars transit can be felt most strongly while the aspect is still forming, rather than precisely at mathematical exactness or after the planet has begun separating.
For example, transiting Mars approaching a square to natal Saturn may coincide with rising frustration, pressure or blocked effort before the exact square is reached.
By the time the aspect is exact, the event or reaction associated with it may already have occurred. Once Mars separates, the pressure may begin to decline even though the numerical orb remains small.
Orbs in synastry
Synastry compares the natal positions of two people. Because both natal charts represent fixed moments, a synastry aspect is also static once calculated.
However, synastry orbs are often restricted more tightly than ordinary natal-chart orbs.
A natal chart describes one person's complete internal structure, so wider aspects may still contribute to that structure. Synastry asks whether a planet in one chart forms a sufficiently direct connection with a planet or angle in another chart.
Using excessively wide synastry orbs can produce so many contacts that almost every pair of charts appears strongly connected.
Many astrologers allow wider synastry orbs when the Sun, Moon, Ascendant or another chart angle is involved. Minor aspects, asteroids and calculated points are generally given much narrower limits.
Approaching or applying aspects
An aspect is approaching, or applying, when the moving planet is getting closer to the exact aspect angle.
Suppose transiting Saturn is moving toward an exact square with natal Mercury:
- at an orb of 3°, the square is applying;
- at an orb of 2°, it is closer;
- at an orb of 1°, it is closer still;
- at 0°, it becomes exact.
Applying aspects are often associated with building pressure, anticipation or the gradual emergence of the transit's theme.

Exact or perfect aspects
An aspect is exact, or perfect, when the angular separation matches the aspect angle as closely as the calculation allows.
Examples include:
- a conjunction at 0°00′;
- a sextile at 60°00′;
- a square at 90°00′;
- a trine at 120°00′;
- an opposition at 180°00′.
Exactness is mathematically important, but it should not automatically be assumed to represent the only meaningful moment of a transit.
Separating aspects
An aspect is separating when the moving planet has passed the exact angle and the orb is beginning to widen.
Suppose a transiting planet has just completed an exact trine:
- at 0°00′, the trine is exact;
- at 0°30′ after exactness, it is separating;
- at 1°30′, it is separating further;
- eventually it moves outside the allowed orb.
Separating aspects are often associated with release, consequences, integration or the gradual fading of the transit's immediate pressure.

A separating aspect may still be highly relevant, especially when an event occurred near exactness and its consequences continue afterward.
Does a tighter orb always mean a stronger aspect?
Most astrologers teach that the closer an aspect is to exactness, the stronger it becomes.
This is a useful general principle, particularly when comparing otherwise similar natal aspects. A square within half a degree will usually receive more attention than a square seven degrees from exactness.
However, the rule is not always reliable when used as an absolute measure of lived intensity.
This is especially true in transit work. An event may occur while the aspect is approaching, before exactness. The exact contact may mark confirmation, culmination or simply the continuation of something already underway.
In other cases, the exact moment may pass quietly while the consequences become obvious during the separating phase.
The orb measures geometric closeness. It does not by itself measure how dramatic, visible or important an experience will feel.
