The 12 Zodiac Signs and Their Archetypes

The zodiac signs describe different archetypal ways in which planetary energy may be expressed. When people ask, “What is your sign?”, they are usually referring to the zodiac sign occupied by the Sun at birth.

What are the zodiac signs?

The zodiac is divided into twelve equal signs, each covering thirty degrees of the 360-degree zodiac circle.

In astrology, the signs do not describe physical objects. They describe styles of expression. A planet shows what kind of energy is operating, while the sign shows how that energy tends to behave.

A useful distinction: the planets describe what is acting, the signs describe how it acts, the houses describe where it acts, and the aspects describe how different parts of the chart interact.

The zodiac signs used in tropical astrology are not the same thing as the astronomical constellations. The signs are twelve equal sections of the ecliptic, while the constellations vary in size.

What is an archetype?

An archetype is a recurring symbolic pattern. It is not a fixed personality type, but a broad model that helps describe a particular style of behaviour, motivation or experience.

For example, Aries is associated with the archetype of the pioneer. This does not mean that every Aries behaves identically. It means that Aries symbolism commonly includes initiative, directness, instinct and the urge to begin.

Taurus may be described through the archetype of the builder, Gemini through the communicator and Cancer through the protector.

Archetypes are not stereotypes. They describe symbolic tendencies, not rigid rules about what every person of a particular sign must be like.

What is your Sun sign?

When people ask, “What is your sign?”, they are usually asking for the zodiac sign occupied by the Sun at the time of birth.

The Sun sign is associated with identity, vitality, purpose and conscious self-expression. It is an important part of the natal chart, but it is not the whole personality.

Every planet occupies a sign. A person may therefore have the Sun in Aries, the Moon in Cancer, Mercury in Pisces, Venus in Taurus and Mars in Gemini.

Your Sun sign is central, but not isolated. It always operates within the wider structure of the natal chart.

The rest of the natal chart changes the expression

Two people with the same Sun sign can behave very differently because the rest of their charts may be completely different.

The Moon, Ascendant, planetary aspects, dominant planets, house placements and overall chart balance can all alter how the Sun sign is expressed.

Example: an Aries Sun with strong Neptune

Aries is usually associated with instinct, initiative, speed and direct action. However, an Aries chart with a very strong Neptune may express those qualities in a softer, less forceful or more uncertain way.

The person may still react instinctively and move from immediate impressions, but Neptune can add imagination, sensitivity, idealism, confusion or reduced vitality.

The result may be an Aries who is still instinctive, but less visibly combative or energetic than the usual stereotype suggests.

This is only an example. A strong Neptune does not always produce the same result, and no single placement overrides the entire chart.

How does the Ascendant add flavour to the Sun sign?

The Ascendant, also called the rising sign, describes the way a person instinctively approaches the world and how they may initially appear to others.

It can add a noticeable layer to the Sun sign, especially in behaviour, presentation and first impressions.

Example: Scorpio Sun with Leo rising

Scorpio is traditionally associated with intensity, privacy, emotional depth and determination. Leo rising may add pride, visibility, confidence and a stronger desire to be recognised.

Such a person may remain psychologically intense and private, while also appearing more expressive, dramatic or proud than the stereotypical Scorpio.

Example: Scorpio Sun with Gemini rising

Gemini rising may add curiosity, adaptability, communication and a lighter social manner.

The person may still possess Scorpio's intensity, but present it through a more flexible, talkative or intellectually restless style. They may appear less obviously deep or secretive at first contact.

There are no fixed formulas. These combinations are examples only. The Moon, chart ruler, aspects and house placements may alter the result considerably.

At its best, Pisces is compassionate, creative, intuitive and spiritually receptive. When unbalanced, it may become confused, passive, escapist or unable to maintain clear boundaries.

How should a zodiac sign be interpreted?

Begin by identifying the planet occupying the sign. Mars in Aries does not mean the same thing as Venus in Aries because Mars and Venus represent different functions.

Then examine the house and aspects. These show where the planetary energy is expressed and how it interacts with the rest of the chart.

Chart factor Question to ask
Planet What type of energy or psychological function is involved?
Sign In what style is that energy expressed?
House In which area of life is it expressed?
Aspects How does it interact with the rest of the chart?
Ascendant What style colours the person's outward approach and first impression?
There are no fixed rules. The examples on this page illustrate possible combinations. A complete interpretation requires the whole natal chart.
