What are astrological houses?
A natal chart is divided into twelve sections known as houses. Each house represents a different area of life, such as relationships, career, family or finances.
Every planet occupies both a zodiac sign and a house. The zodiac sign describes how that planet expresses itself, while the house indicates the area of life where that energy is most likely to be experienced.
- The planet is who is acting.
- The zodiac sign is how it acts.
- The house is where it acts.

How are houses calculated?
Houses are calculated using the exact date, time and location of birth.
The Ascendant marks the beginning of the first house, after which the remaining houses are determined according to the selected house system.
Because the Earth rotates continuously, house cusps move throughout the day. An incorrect birth time may therefore place planets into the wrong houses.
Different house systems
Astrology uses several house systems, including Placidus, Whole Sign, Koch, Equal House and Porphyry.
Different systems may produce different house cusps, especially at higher latitudes, although planetary positions within the zodiac remain unchanged.
Planets in houses
Every planet gains additional meaning from the house it occupies.
For example, Venus in the seventh house may emphasise partnerships, while Venus in the tenth house may express itself more strongly through career or public life.
House interpretation always depends on the entire natal chart rather than a single placement.
What if a house is empty?
Empty houses are completely normal.
They do not indicate that an area of life is missing or unimportant. Instead, astrologers often examine the ruling planet of that house and any aspects affecting it to understand how that life area operates.
Why birth time is important
Unlike planetary positions, house positions depend directly on the exact birth time.
Even a difference of fifteen or twenty minutes may shift planets close to house cusps into neighbouring houses.
If the birth time is unknown, house interpretations should be treated with caution.
