What is a house cusp?

A cusp is the precise zodiac degree at which an astrological house begins.

The natal chart is divided into twelve houses. Each house represents a different area of life, and every house begins at a particular zodiac degree.

For example, the fifth-house cusp may begin at 12° Taurus. Everything immediately before that degree belongs to the fourth house, while positions after that boundary belong to the fifth house.

How do cusps divide the houses?

Each house begins at its cusp and continues until the cusp of the following house.

The four most familiar cusps are also the principal angles of the chart:

The remaining house cusps divide the other areas of life, including money, communication, creativity, work, shared resources, travel and friendships.

Can a planet influence two houses?

When a planet is very close to a house cusp, many astrologers interpret it as influencing both the house in which it is technically located and the neighbouring house.

The planet still belongs to one house according to the exact calculation. However, its proximity to the boundary may connect its symbolism with the subjects of both houses.

Example: the Sun close to the fifth-house cusp

Suppose the Sun is technically positioned in the fifth house but lies very close to the cusp separating the fourth and fifth houses.

The fifth house is associated with creativity, pleasure, romance, children and personal self-expression.

The fourth house is associated with home, family, privacy, emotional roots and the person's inner foundation.

The Sun may therefore express itself through both areas:

• creativity and self-expression may be strongly connected with family or home life;
• personal confidence may develop through private or domestic experiences;
• children, pleasure or creative projects may become important within the family environment;
• the person may need both private security and visible self-expression.

Cusps in the natal chart

In a natal chart, a planet near a cusp may connect two permanent areas of life.

For example, Venus close to the seventh-house cusp may connect personal self-expression with relationships. Saturn close to the tenth-house cusp may connect private responsibilities with career and public life.

Cusp influence can be especially noticeable when a planet lies close to one of the four principal angles: the Ascendant, Descendant, Midheaven or Imum Coeli.

Cusps in transits

The same principle can be applied to transiting planets.

As a moving planet approaches a house cusp, the themes of the next house may begin to emerge before the planet technically enters it.

Likewise, immediately after crossing the cusp, the previous house may remain relevant for a short period.

Example: Saturn approaching the tenth house

Saturn may still be positioned in the ninth house while approaching the tenth-house cusp.

Ninth-house matters such as education, travel, law or belief may still be active, while career, responsibility and public reputation begin to become increasingly important.

Cusps in Solar and Lunar Returns

Planets close to house cusps can also influence two areas of life in Solar and Lunar Return charts.

In a Solar Return, this may connect two themes across the year. In a Lunar Return, it may describe two areas that become linked during the month.

Example: Mars near the seventh-house cusp

Mars positioned at the end of the sixth house but close to the seventh-house cusp may connect work, routine or health pressures with relationships and partnerships.

A disagreement may arise because of workload, or a partner may become involved in a practical problem.

Does the same cusp rule apply to zodiac signs?

No. House cusps and sign boundaries are different concepts.

A planet close to a house cusp may influence two houses because houses represent neighbouring areas of life and depend on the birth time and location.

Zodiac signs, however, are fixed thirty-degree sections of the zodiac. A planet occupies one sign according to its exact longitude.

Example

A planet at 29°59′ Aries is still in Aries. It does not become partly Taurus simply because it is close to the sign boundary.

As soon as it reaches 0°00′ Taurus, it is in Taurus.

Other chart factors may make a person appear to combine the characteristics of neighbouring signs, but this comes from the complete chart rather than from being born “between” two Sun signs.

How close must a planet be to a cusp?

Astrologers use different rules to decide when a planet is close enough to a house boundary to influence both houses.

Some use a very narrow distance of approximately one degree. Others allow two, three or even more degrees, especially around the principal angles.

There is no universally accepted distance. The chosen rule should be applied consistently rather than changed according to the desired interpretation.

How does AstroNet identify a cusp placement?

AstroNet considers a planet or chart point to be close to a house cusp when it lies within 2°30′ of the boundary.

When this condition is met, AstroNet displays the word Cusp beside the placement.

This indicates that the planet should be interpreted primarily in its calculated house while also considering the themes of the neighbouring house.

How should a cusp placement be interpreted?

Begin with the planet's technical house position. This remains its primary placement.

Then examine the neighbouring house and ask how the two areas of life might become connected.
