What does love mean in synastry?

Synastry does not contain one single indicator that proves two people are in love.

Instead, it describes several different forms of connection:

• romantic interest and courtship;
• emotional familiarity and comfort;
• physical and sexual attraction;
• commitment and partnership;
• psychological intensity or obsession;
• friendship, cooperation and shared interests.

These experiences can exist together, but they do not always do so. Two people may have strong sexual chemistry without emotional compatibility, or a stable partnership without dramatic physical attraction.

Emotional maturity matters more than any single aspect

The level of maturity of both people is fundamental to every synastry interpretation.

The same aspect can be expressed constructively or destructively depending on self-awareness, honesty, communication and respect for boundaries.

Venus conjunct Pluto, for example, may describe profound emotional magnetism. In a mature relationship, this may support devotion and psychological intimacy. In a less mature relationship, it may become possessiveness, control or obsession.

The fifth, seventh and eighth houses describe different stages and dimensions of relationships.

The fifth house describes the playful and expressive side of love.

This is sometimes described as a youthful or teenage form of love. That does not make it shallow or negative. It means that the emphasis is on excitement, discovery, attraction and having fun together.

Compared with the fifth house, the seventh house is generally more concerned with commitment, cooperation and the practical reality of forming a relationship.

When another person's planets fall into the seventh house, they may appear to embody qualities associated with the house person's idea of a partner.

Saturn can restrict the development of a relationship

Saturn deserves particular attention in romantic synastry because it can substantially change the meaning of otherwise attractive house overlays and planetary contacts.

Saturn is associated with limits, fear, delay, emotional restraint, responsibility and the confrontation of reality. When strongly connected with the fifth, seventh or eighth house, it may make the relationship feel more serious, difficult or restricted.

Hard aspects between Venus and Saturn

A Venus–Saturn square or opposition is traditionally associated with emotional inhibition, fear of rejection, disappointment, unequal affection or circumstances that make the relationship difficult to develop.

Can squares create powerful attraction?

Yes. Squares can be as powerful as conjunctions, but the connection usually contains greater friction.

A square creates pressure between planetary functions that operate in different ways.

In synastry, this tension can make the other person difficult to ignore. The frustration itself may contribute to the attraction.

Venus square Mars

Venus square Mars can create strong sexual and romantic tension, but the two people may disagree about pace, affection, desire or how the relationship should develop.

No synastry aspect guarantees love

A synastry chart cannot prove that two people love one another, will begin a relationship or will remain together.

Strong attraction may be one-sided. A seventh-house overlay may create the perception of an ideal partner without producing mutual commitment.

Likewise, an intense eighth-house or Pluto connection may create obsession without trust, respect or long-term compatibility.
