What is a Solar Return?

A Solar Return is a chart calculated for the exact moment when the transiting Sun returns to the same zodiac longitude it occupied at birth.

This happens approximately once every year, close to the birthday. The exact return may occur on the birthday itself, the day before or the day after, depending on the year and the natal Sun's precise position.

The chart is commonly interpreted as a yearly horoscope. It describes the main themes, priorities, pressures and areas of development that may become important until the following Solar Return.

What does “return” mean in astrology?

A return occurs when a moving planet reaches the same zodiac position it occupied in the natal chart.

For example:

• a Solar Return occurs when the Sun returns to its natal longitude, roughly once every year;
• a Lunar Return occurs when the Moon returns to its natal longitude, roughly once every twenty-seven days;
• a Saturn Return occurs when Saturn returns to its natal longitude, roughly every twenty-nine years.

The return chart is calculated for that exact moment and then interpreted as the beginning of a new cycle for the planet involved.

How does the Sun move through the zodiac?

From Earth's point of view, the Sun appears to move through the twelve zodiac signs over the course of approximately one year.

The Sun advances by roughly one degree per day, although its apparent speed is not perfectly constant.

After completing the full 360-degree zodiac cycle, it returns to the exact zodiac longitude it occupied at birth. This is the moment of the Solar Return.

How is a Solar Return calculated?

The first step is to identify the exact zodiac longitude of the natal Sun.

Once the exact time has been found, a new chart is created for:

The Solar Return as a yearly horoscope

The Solar Return is commonly interpreted as the horoscope for the year ahead. Its influence begins at the moment of the Solar Return and remains active until the next one.

It can describe:

• the main themes of the year;
• the areas of life requiring the greatest attention;
• opportunities for growth and development;
• possible challenges and responsibilities;
• important relationships and life changes;
• the overall psychological atmosphere of the year.

Unlike daily or monthly forecasting techniques, the Solar Return provides the broad framework within which the rest of the year's astrology unfolds.

Lunar Returns must be read within the Solar Return

The Lunar Return should not be interpreted as an independent chart.

The Solar Return establishes the broader themes of the year, while the Lunar Return describes a shorter monthly period inside that yearly framework.

A Lunar Return may show temporary pressure, movement or opportunity, but it should not overturn the principal direction shown by the Solar Return.

Forecasting hierarchy

This interpretation framework follow a clear hierarchy.

When the techniques appear to contradict one another, the Solar Return should be given priority.

Example

Suppose the Solar Return describes a year of professional consolidation, discipline and gradual progress.

A Lunar Return containing Jupiter in the tenth house may describe a more optimistic or active professional month, but it should not automatically be interpreted as a complete reversal of the yearly Saturnian theme.

Which location should be used for a Solar Return?

Astrologers disagree about the correct geographical location for calculating return charts.

Three main approaches are commonly used:

How do you read a Solar Return?

A Solar Return is not interpreted in the same way as a natal chart. Its symbolism applies to the year between one birthday and the next.

1. Check where the Solar Return Ascendant falls in the radix chart.

   Take the exact degree of the Solar Return Ascendant and locate that same degree in the natal chart.

   For example, if the Solar Return Ascendant is at 3° Aries, identify which natal house contains 3° Aries. That natal house becomes one of the principal themes of the year.

2. Examine the planets in the Solar Return houses.

   Begin with the Sun, as its house often indicates the main area of development or attention during the year.

   Pay particular attention to Mars and Saturn for possible challenges, responsibilities and periods requiring greater effort.

   Jupiter and Venus may indicate opportunities, support, confidence or areas where life tends to flow more easily.

   Planets close to the Ascendant, Descendant, Midheaven and Imum Coeli should also receive special attention, as they often become especially prominent throughout the year.

3. Study the aspects.

   Most astrologers include aspects when interpreting Solar Returns.

   Close aspects involving the Sun, the chart ruler, angular planets and planets such as Mars, Jupiter, Saturn and Venus often reveal the strongest themes of the year.

Example

Suppose the Solar Return Ascendant falls in the natal tenth house, the Solar Return Sun is also in the tenth house and Saturn is close to the Midheaven.

Even before considering transits, the chart already suggests that career, responsibility, reputation and long-term professional goals will be important themes during the year.

A later Lunar Return with Saturn near the Midheaven or Mars in the sixth house may indicate the particular month when those professional responsibilities become especially active.

Likewise, a Mars or Saturn transit activating the same career sector would reinforce the interpretation.

Should aspects be considered in a Solar Return?

Astrologers are divided on how much importance should be given to aspects in a Solar Return.

Two broad schools are common:

Supporters of the house-focused method argue that Lunar Returns are short-lived and that the house emphasis is the clearest yearly indicator.

Supporters of the aspect-inclusive method argue that aspects add important information about how the monthly energies cooperate, conflict or become concentrated.

What are the limits of Solar Returns?

• a reliable birth time;

• the astrologer's method of interpretation;
• the wider natal chart and current transits.

Different astrologers may also give different importance to house placements, angular planets, aspects, house rulers or chart patterns. For this reason, interpretations of the same Solar Return can vary.
