Astrological Transits Explained

A transit describes the relationship between the current position of a moving planet and the positions in a natal chart. Transits are used to examine changing periods, temporary influences and the way current planetary movement interacts with the birth chart.

What is a transit in astrology?

The planets continue moving after a person is born. A transit compares those current planetary positions with the fixed positions recorded in the natal chart.

For example, if transiting Saturn reaches the same zodiac degree as natal Venus, it forms a Saturn conjunction to Venus. If transiting Mars moves approximately ninety degrees from natal Mercury, it forms a square.

In simple terms: the natal chart is the fixed starting map, while transits describe the planets moving around that map over time.

Transits do not replace the natal chart. Their meaning depends on the natal planets, houses and patterns they activate.

Outer planets set the wider landscape

Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune and Pluto move more slowly than the personal planets. Their transits can remain active for months or, in some cases, much longer.

These planets often describe the broader landscape of a period rather than one isolated event.

FJupiter

May emphasise expansion, confidence, opportunity, excess, education or a wider field of experience.

GSaturn

May emphasise responsibility, limitation, commitment, consolidation and long-term effort.

HUranus

May emphasise disruption, independence, experimentation and unexpected change.

INeptune

May emphasise uncertainty, imagination, sensitivity, idealisation or weakened boundaries.

JPluto

May emphasise intensity, power, endings, transformation and psychological pressure.

Think of the outer planets as the climate. They often describe the longer environment within which shorter daily events take place.

Faster planets shape everyday experience

The Sun, the Moon, Mercury, Venus and Mars move more quickly. Their transits are usually shorter and can describe the immediate way a longer period is experienced.

A slow Saturn transit may describe months of pressure or responsibility, while a faster Mars transit may mark the particular day on which frustration becomes active or a decision is made.

ASun

Identity, vitality, self-expression, sense of purpose and the drive to develop individuality.

UMoon

Emotional tone, changing mood, instinctive reaction and short-lived sensitivity.

CMercury

Thought, communication, messages, decisions, travel and mental activity.

DVenus

Relationships, pleasure, money, social ease, attraction and personal values.

EMars

Action, urgency, conflict, irritation, desire, courage and physical effort.

Faster planets do not necessarily create major events by themselves. They may instead trigger or make visible a longer pattern already established by slower planets.

Transit aspects

A transit aspect forms when a moving planet reaches a significant angular relationship with a natal planet or chart point.

Aspect General transit theme
l Conjunction Concentration, activation and direct emphasis
j Opposition Polarity, confrontation, awareness and external pressure
i Square Friction, action, challenge and the need to respond
h Trine Flow, support and easier development
k Sextile Opportunity, cooperation and openings that may require action

The transiting planet describes the type of current pressure or movement. The natal planet describes the function being activated.

For example, transiting Saturn square natal Mercury may connect responsibility or restriction with thought, communication, study or decision-making.

Transits through natal houses

A transiting planet also moves through the houses of the natal chart. The house describes the area of life in which the transit is unfolding.

A planet does not need to form an exact natal aspect at every moment in order for its house position to have interpretive value.

For example, transiting Neptune through the ninth house may coincide with uncertainty, idealisation or anxiety involving travel, education, belief, legal matters or future direction.

This could be noticeable even when Neptune is not forming a close aspect to a natal planet.

This does not mean that the house transit guarantees a specific event. Neptune in the ninth house does not prove that travel problems or anxiety must occur. It describes one possible symbolic theme.

Can a transit affect an empty natal house?

Yes. A natal house does not need to contain a planet in order to represent an area of life.

An empty ninth house still represents subjects such as travel, higher education, philosophy, law and belief. When a transiting planet enters that house, those themes may become more active.

The house ruler should also be examined. Even when the house itself is empty, its ruling planet connects it to another part of the chart.

Empty does not mean inactive. Every natal house remains part of the chart and can be activated by transits, progressions, returns and other timing techniques.

Why integrate Solar and Lunar returns?

A transit describes current planetary movement, but isolated transits can be difficult to prioritise. At any moment, many transits may be active at the same time.

We recommend to treat solar and lunar returns as an important interpretive framework.

The solar return describes the broad themes of the year beginning around the birthday. The lunar return describes a shorter monthly cycle beginning when the Moon returns to its natal position.

Solar return

Broad yearly framework, dominant concerns and major areas of emphasis.

Lunar return

Shorter emotional and practical emphasis within the wider solar-return period.

Transits

Moving activations that can time, trigger or emphasise themes already visible in the returns.

Reading these techniques together can produce a more coherent interpretation than treating each individual transit as an independent prediction.

Interpretive hierarchy

When integrating Solar Returns there is an hierarchy when combining timing techniques.

Level Technique Role
1 Solar return Establishes the principal yearly framework
2 Lunar return Describes a shorter monthly phase inside the yearly framework
3 Transits Activate, time or intensify themes supported by the wider context
Within this method, the solar return leads. Lunar returns and transits are interpreted inside the yearly structure rather than as completely separate systems.

We recommend this hierarchy. Not every astrologer uses the same order, and some may place greater emphasis on transits, progressions or other forecasting techniques.

Can a lunar return or transit contradict the solar return?

Within this system, a lower-level technique should not overturn the main direction shown by the solar return.

A lunar return may describe a difficult month inside an otherwise constructive year, but it should not transform the entire yearly theme into its opposite.

Likewise, a favourable short transit does not necessarily promise a major positive event if the wider return structure does not support one.

Example

Suppose the solar return strongly emphasises career responsibility, consolidation and slow progress.

A Venus or Jupiter transit may bring a pleasant opportunity, helpful contact or temporary improvement, but it should still be interpreted within the larger pattern of work, patience and responsibility.

Hierarchy does not mean ignoring detail. A short transit can still be meaningful. It simply should not be interpreted in a way that contradicts the broader forecasting framework.

Approaching, exact and separating transits

A transit normally moves through three stages:

Stage Meaning
Approaching The moving planet is getting closer to the exact aspect
Exact The angular relationship reaches mathematical perfection
Separating The moving planet has passed exactness and the orb is widening

The approaching phase may describe growing pressure or anticipation. Exactness may coincide with culmination, confirmation or a visible turning point. The separating phase may describe consequences, release or integration.

The exact moment is not always the most noticeable one. A transit may become subjectively stronger before exactness or produce consequences after it has begun separating. See orbs for more details.

How should a transit be interpreted?

Begin with the natal chart. A transit can only activate themes that have somewhere to operate within the natal structure.

Step Question to ask
Transiting planet What type of current energy or pressure is involved?
Natal planet Which personal function is being activated?
Aspect Is the interaction flowing, tense, concentrated or adjusting?
House In which area of life is the transit operating?
Orb and phase Is the transit approaching, exact or separating?
Solar return Does the yearly chart support the same theme?
Lunar return Is the theme especially active during the current monthly cycle?

The strongest interpretations usually occur when several techniques repeat the same theme.

For example, a career-related solar return, a lunar return emphasising the tenth house and a Saturn transit to the Midheaven all point in a similar direction.

Repetition increases confidence. One isolated transit is less persuasive than several independent techniques describing the same area of life.
Transits are symbolic indicators, not guaranteed events. They should be used as an interpretive framework rather than as proof that one specific outcome must occur.
